Albon tops final morning session from test one

Alexander Albon has topped the morning session from the final day of test one in Barcelona.

The Thai-British driver's fastest lap was set on the C5 tyres, the softest in Pirelli's 2019 range. His time read a 1:17.637, which is the quickest time that has been set at pre-season testing so far this year.

Albon's time was enough to beat Daniel Ricciardo and Lewis Hamilton, who ended the session in second and third respectively. The top three were the only drivers to set sub 1:18 lap times, as Charles Leclerc was fourth for Ferrari with a 1:18.0.

Ferrari once again set the most amount of laps from any team, with Leclerc completing 75 laps for the Scuderia. Following the 21-year-old was Italian Antonio Giovinazzi in the Alfa Romeo.

The French duo of Romain Grosjean and Pierre Gasly followed as Lando Norris was eighth. The McLaren driver caused the only red flag of the session, as he ended up in the gravel early on in the morning as the track temperature was still low.

Lance Stroll was ninth for Racing Point, while Robert Kubica completed 48 laps for Williams on what is its first full day of testing in 2019.

  • Albon has so far looked pretty impressive, he has just more or less jumped in and performed up to scratch.

    • Agree, and also like his demeanor. He carries himself well for a rookie.
