Albon vreest dat coureurs auto's in 2026 gaan 'misbruiken'

Alex Albon heeft al simulatorrondjes gereden met de auto van 2026. Albon gelooft dat 'slimme' coureurs het nieuwe energiemanagementsysteem zouden kunnen gaan misbruiken. Zo zouden zij een voorsprong hebben op de rest.

Williams staat momenteel vijfde achter de top, maar ver boven de rest. Albon heeft de meeste punten voor het team van Williams binnengehaald. De Thai denkt dus een voorsprong te hebben voor komend seizoen.

Goed racen

Alex Albon wil eerlijk racen volgend seizoen: "Uiteindelijk wil ik gewoon goed racen", zei hij. "Ik denk dat we allemaal gewoon goed willen racen. Ik weet niet zeker of de snelheid van de auto's of de manier waarop ze worden bestuurd veel zal veranderen."

"Ik denk niet dat het een Formule E-achtige race wordt, met die enorme lift-and-coast-sessies en al dat soort dingen. Maar ik denk niet dat het veel zal veranderen", zo zegt Albon tegenover de internationale media in België.

'Het is nog vroeg'

Het Formule 1-seizoen is nog maar op de helft, dus het is nog vroeg om over volgend seizoen te praten: "Het is nu nog zo vroeg. We zijn nog volop bezig met de simulator, en werken nauw samen met HPP en al die mensen om te begrijpen wat de meest efficiënte manier is om het te doen. Uiteraard willen de Formule 1 en de reglementen ook dat de coureurs bij veel van deze dingen geen hulp krijgen.

"Er is veel dat de coureur moet doen. Ik denk niet dat het altijd alleen maar om hoe goed de coureur is zal gaan. Een coureur die slim is en het systeem begrijpt en misbruikt om te begrijpen hoe het werkt en er efficiënt mee omgaat, zal daar ook prestaties uit halen", zo eindigt Albon zijn praatje met de internationale media. De coureur staat momenteel achtste in het wereldkampioenschap met maar liefst 33 punten boven teamgenoot Carlos Sainz.

"I don't think it's going to become Formula E style where you're getting these massive lift and coast sessions and all these kind of things. But I don't think it will change too much."

Pushed specifically on the energy management system and how it can be leveraged by the driver, Albon admitted that a smart driver would be able to "abuse the system" to gain an advantage.

"For now, it's so early. We're still going through a lot of the simulator, working closely with HPP and all these kind of people to understand what is the most efficient way to do it. Obviously, Formula 1 and the regulations also want the drivers to have no assistance on a lot of these things.

"There is a lot that the driver has to do. I don't think it will always just purely be around how good the driver is around the corner.

"A driver who's quite smart and can understand the system and abuse the system to understand how it works and becomes efficient on it, they're going to find performance in that as well."

He added: "More than now, for sure."

“It’s difficult to drive. The load on the driver mentally is high as well,” the Anglo-Thai driver said.

“It’s quite important to know how to use the engine and the deployment and you have to learn a different driving style, but it’s part of the regulations.

“It’s technology at the end of the day. So on our side, I wasn’t that shocked by the car, the performance of the car.

“It was more just getting my head around the PU and understanding how to make the most of that.”

However, there will be a difference in overall drivability, which will separate the wheat from the chaff, according to Albon.

“I’m not moaning. I’m just saying it’s different. Like it’s really different to drive,” the Williams driver concluded.

“The drivers that are really going to go well on this are the ones that can be really adaptable.

“You’re gonna have to have a very open-minded approach to how to drive these cars, and I believe that the drivers who have the capacity to drive and understand how to drive them.

“Even these cars now we are driving them flat out.

“You have a bit of PU clipping and all these kinds of things, but for next year it’s going to be a bit more of a complete package as to how you get to that.

“There is a lot that the driver has to do. I don’t think it will always just purely be around how good the driver is around the corner.
