Hamilton fastest in drizzly Silverstone FP3

Lewis Hamilton gave his home fans something to smile about on Saturday morning at Silverstone as he topped what became a soggy Free Practice 3 for the British Grand Prix. His best lap time was a 1:28.063, 0.032s faster than that achieved by his title rival Sebastian Vettel, whose Ferrari slotted into second.

Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who will be hit by a five-place gearbox penalty for the race, was third, with Kimi Raikkonen fourth, Nico Hulkenberg an impressive fifth and Daniel Ricciardo - who will also be demoted five grid spots - in sixth.

Romain Grosjean improved to seventh in his Haas with his Carbon Industrie brakes - his team-mate Kevin Magnussen was forced to change to Brembo early in the session - whilst Max Verstappen was eighth as the first driver on the Soft tyre. Felipe Massa took ninth for Williams with another dependable showing, whilst Stoffel Vandoorne rounded out the top ten for McLaren.

His own team-mate Fernando Alonso was eleventh, followed by Esteban Ocon in twelfth and the aforementioned Magnussen thirteenth with his new brakes. Jolyon Palmer was fourteenth, again struggling to match team-mate Hulkenberg, with Sergio Perez a distant fifteenth and the Toro Rossos of Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz sixteenth and seventeenth. Pascal Wehrlein was the lead Sauber in eighteenth, directly ahead of team-mate Marcus Ericsson, while Lance Stroll's Williams was a surprise last - he will be hoping to improve in qualifying.
