Pascal Wehrlein has blamed his retirement on inexperience, saying that had he been in F1 longer he would have been able to make the call to stay out longer before pitting.
The German spun just six laps into the race after switching to intermediate tyres once the safety car had gone in.
"For us it was too early with the downforce level we have," he said. "You don’t expect to spin on a straight line with 250-300kph and you are on full throttle. In the end, of course I could have braked, but it’s always a bit unlucky if you spin on a straight."
"“If I had [more] experience, I could have told the team 'I think maybe we should stay out two or three laps [longer]' but it was just guessing whether it was right or not," he added. "It was not right and I need to learn from that experience. Next time I will know that if the track is wet like that then we should stay out a bit longer on full wets."
Wehrlein will be in action this week testing 2017 spec rubber for Pirelli driving a 2014-spec Mercedes.
