Felipe Massa ended the final practice session at Monza on top during what was an exceptionally wet session. The rain meant that no cars were seen on track for the first 45 minutes, as it was decided by Charlie Whiting that the conditions were too wet.
However, the cars eventually fiddled out in the last number of minutes, but only seven drivers decided to set a lap time. Following Massa in second place was his teammate Lance Stroll, with just over two-tenths of a second separating the pair.
Nico Hulkenberg was third for Renault, followed by the Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz. Jolyon Palmer was fifth, although the Briton's pace was three seconds down on his teammate, suggesting he eased off around the circuit. Completing the list of set lap times was Marcus Ericsson and Daniil Kvyat.
None of the frontrunners set a time, although they did emerge from the pits to test the conditions. Running for qualifying is once again expected to be very wet and tricky for the drivers.
