Daniel Ricciardo was positive about the progress made by Red Bull Racing in practice for the Japanese Grand Prix, despite finishing down the order in 12th in the second session.
The Malaysia Grand Prix winner ended the first session in fifth, behind both Ferraris and Mercedes, but dropped down the order in second practice after a virtual safety car period was initiated to clear Esteban Gutierrez's Haas from the track.
However, the Australian in confident he would have been closer to the Ferrari's had his qualifying simulation was neutralised.
"It was a pretty good day, a pretty good afternoon," he said. "We made some improvements from this morning, so the lap that we had to abort was probably going to be in the 32s, so probably just behind Kimi's time."
"Ferrari looked pretty strong but we are sort of close enough for today, so that was okay," Ricciardo added. "Then the long run seemed pretty solid at the end there. We finished on the hard tyre and that seemed pretty decent, so it is good to be back on this circuit."
