Max Verstappen admits that a poor start cost him any chance of a podium at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The Red Bull driver clawed his way back up the grid after bogging down at the start and losing several positions. Because of this, he thinks sixth was the best he could do in the race.
"Taking into account what happened in the beginning, I think sixth place is the most I could hope for after all things considered," said Verstappen.
"It's difficult when you are in the slack of the pack. If you follow a car closely for three laps, your tyres are destroyed. But when you have a clear track, it's so good. Unfortunately I did not have the clear track often today!"
Verstappen is also aware that he was very lucky not to be taken out by the spinning Force India of Nico Hulkenberg, who was tagged by Carlos Sainz.
"Honestly, my race was decided at the start. I do not know how I managed to avoid the Force India of Nico [Hulkenberg]. I think I dodged a bullet!"
