Nico Rosberg beats Daniel Ricciardo to Singapore pole

Nico Rosberg has taken pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, beating Daniel Ricciardo, while team mate Lewis Hamilton struggled and could only manage third.

Rosberg, who topped both second and third practice, was untouchable in the final part of practice, whereas Lewis Hamilton in the sister Mercedes lost a lot of time in the first corner and the middle sector of his final lap, allowing Red Bull's Ricciardo to edge him by a tenth of a second.

Hamilton was however able to split the Red Bulls as Max Verstappen could only muster the fourth fastest time.

Kimi Raikkonen completed the top five int eh sole remaining Ferrari after apparent suspension issues left Sebastian Vettel exiting qualifying early on.

Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kvyat put in a strong showing for Toro Rosso. Sainz believes this race could be the team's final decent chance of scoring points in 2016, he was sixth fastest, one spot ahead of his team mate.

After a yellow flag controversy in Q2, both Force India drivers got into the final part of qualifying, knocking out their rival Williams drivers despite yellow flags being shown on their flying laps.

Hulkenberg was eighth with Sergio Perez in tenth, the duo being slit by McLaren's Fernando Alonso. Williams drivers Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa meanwhile had to settle for 11th and 12th.

Jenson Button was 13th in the other McLaren, in front of Haas' Esteban Gutierrez and Romain Grosjean. Button Grosjean's qualifying sessions were ended after collisions with the barriers that brought out the controversial yellow flags.

Marcus Ericsson was 16th after making it through to the second part of qualifying, while Kevin Magnussen, Ericsson's Sauber team mate Felipe Nasr, Jolyon Palmer, Pascal Wehrlein, Esteban Ocon, and Vettel all went out in the first part of qualifying.
