Lewis Hamilton started the Italian Grand Prix on pole position after an obliterating qualifying lap but it all counted for nothing after a horrible getaway dropped him to sixth after turn one.
Hamilton has established a unwanted trait of having poor race starts this season with other torrid getawyas also coming at Australia, Bahrain and Canada.
“Lewis came on the radio and said it was his mistake and we have to analyse it,” Wolff said.
“We want to give more responsibility to the driver and this time it went against him. But he has had many good starts and it can happen.”
Despite the error, Hamilton used his car superiority and two stop strategy to come back and finish in second position behind his team-mate Nico Rosberg. The gap in the championship is now just two points with Hamilton leading Rosberg.
