Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the Italian Grand Prix today by a hefty margin over his team-mate. His pole also matches the record of Ayrton Senna and Juan Manuel Fangio for the most Italian pole positions.
"Obviously very happy today, I was only made aware of that record [5 Italian Grand Prix pole positions] as I came into this weekend so of course that was in the back of my mind but hopefully it wouldn't steer me off course.
"And, yeah, I feel incredibly proud to be up and amongst [Ayrton] Senna and Juan Manuel [Fangio], I mean they are incredible drivers and never in a million years did I think I would be mentioned in the same sentence as theirs so very proud of that.
"Today and this weekend I had a very strong feeling, I came into my 'A' game today and particulary that last lap felt incredible. It's such a great track, there's such a great crowd. A big thank you to all those who came out but this team and what this team has achieved, as race by race I continue to say is just phenomenal.
"I'm so fortunate to be driving for this team, to be representing them and to drive the car as it was today, I got it right in the sweet spot and was able to have an exceptional time with it."
