"Of course we want to win, but only the two Mercedes can at the moment," he said. "Everyone is just watching them, some are a little closer or a little further behind but with a poor progression so I prefer to be in this project which is really improving."
Alonso's two best race finishes since his return to McLaren at the start of last year have come at the 2015 Hungarian Grand Prix and the 2016 Monaco Grand Prix where he finished fifth.
