Williams sponsor Acronis denies Sirotkin link

A new Williams sponsor says the deal with the British team is not connected with the arrival of Russian driver Sergey Sirotkin. Earlier, software company Acronis backed Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso, but that money is now moving over to Williams.

But Acronis boss Serguei Beloussov insisted: "We started negotiating with Williams much earlier. Sergey was part of Renault and he could have stayed there or gone to Toro Rosso," he told the Russian source Championat.

"Our agreements do not depend on Sergey's contract. Of course, the fact that he is at Williams is a plus and meant we preferred Williams," Beloussov added. Sirotkin is heavily backed by the Russian bank-run SMP Racing programme. (GMM)

    • Not quite clear to make out whether you believe it yes or no... I am guessing you don't believe it, otherwise you would not have asked the question, but that means the answer to your 2nd question is also no?

  • It could be, it couldnt be. I honestly dont care very much. They are free to do whatever they please. 'sides, whats with all this suspission as soon as anything Russian is involved? Im aware there's plenty of corruption there, but far from anything Russian is rotten. And you know, western companies arent exactly smelling as roses.... unless you meant ass roses.

I think it's more a case of "we wont admit we're involved with Sirotkin so as to further add to his pay-driver status". Which is all nonsense of course. But trying to hide it is what creates all the suspicion.

    • Fair enough, except this has probably been done over and over before, and hasnt been even as remotely scrutinized as the backers, be it obvious or not as obvious, of Russian drivers. Nobody seemed to mind Maldonado being sponsored by PDVSA, and they are pretty much entry level scum.

  • Standard procedure... we've seen this same show with Pastor Maldonado (PDVSA), Esteban Gutierrez, Rio Haryanto, etc.
