Lewis Hamilton has taken his 55th career pole position at his home Grand Prix.
The Mercedes driver beat team mate Nico Rosberg to pole by three tenths of a second with Max Verstappen in third.
"First I want to say how amazed and grateful I am for the fans this weekend," said Hamilton. "From Thursday until today, it's the biggest crowd I've ever seen. They gave a lot of big and powerful energy."
"It wasn't the cleanest of quali sessions," he added. "I had good pace in Q1, after that very good pace on the penultimate lap, it didn't feel like I ran wide, the car bottomed and I went outside. There was a lot of pressure for the last lap, I was sitting in the garage and I couldn't let the guys down."
"I'm grateful for the lap I did, thanks to the team for the job they did, a great performance. There wasn't a need for things to be cleared up, we both know which way to go," he said. "It's all clear. The fans give me a lot of motivation Important race tomorrow, I will give it everything I got, the lap pace is strong, the car is in a nice balance for the race. Can't wait to see it tomorrow."
Hamilton is now just 13 pole positions away from the all time record set by seven time world champion Michael Schumacher.
