Sebastian Vettel was the quickest man in a very wet third free practice session in China. Williams driver Bottas was first to go out, 15 minutes after the session's start, shortly followed by rookie Jolyon Palmer. Palmer later retired from the session due to a puncture caused by the car's chassis. Due to a broken suspension, Sauber's Marcus Ericsson did not run until the very last minute, and he did not set a time this session. Mercedes both drivers did not set laptimes either, and Hamilton reported an engine malfunction. All in all, only 14 cars set laptimes in this session, with the remaining cars instead opting for installation laps alone.
