Honda komt met verklaring na rampzalige tests van Aston Martin

Het team van Aston Martin kende een dramatische voorbereiding op het nieuwe Formule 1-seizoen. De Britse renstal rijdt dit jaar voor het eerst met motoren van Honda, en die lijken nog niet naar wens te werken. De Japanners zijn nu met een verklaring naar buiten gekomen.

Het is geen geheim dat het team van Aston Martin droomt van de wereldtitel in de Formule 1. In de afgelopen jaren hebben ze veel geïnvesteerd in het project, en voor dit jaar zijn er nog meer grote stappen gezet die het project vooruit moeten helpen.

Aston Martin heeft namelijk topontwerper Adrian Newey aangetrokken. De Brit wordt gezien als de beste in zijn vakgebied, en hij was in de afgelopen jaren bij Red Bull verantwoordelijk voor de titelwinnende auto's van Sebastian Vettel en Nederlander Max Verstappen. In de schaduw van Newey kwam ook Enrico Cardile over van Ferrari, en werd er een motordeal gesloten met Honda.

De Japanners werkten in de afgelopen jaren samen met Red Bull, waar ze met Verstappen veel successen beleefden. Bij Aston Martin hopen ze dit dunnetjes over te doen, maar tijdens de testweken in Bahrein kwamen er veel problemen aan het licht. Door de problemen konden ze op de laatste testdag zelfs amper meters maken.

Wat is het gevoel bij Honda?

Op de motorfabriek in het Japanse Sakura worden inmiddels overuren gedraaid. Honda Racing Corporation-president Koji Watanabe gaf tekst en uitleg tijdens een persconferentie: "Eerlijk gezegd waren de tests voor ons behoorlijk zwaar. We konden de verwachtte prestaties niet voldoende leveren en er zijn verschillende complexe problemen aan het licht gekomen. Tegelijkertijd was de test een zeer belangrijk proces, omdat we hierdoor onze knelpunten zichtbaar hebben kunnen maken."

Hard werken aan een oplossing

Volgens Watanabe wordt alles in het werk gesteld om de problemen op te lossen: "Onze engineers en monteurs werken nu nauwer dan ooit samen om verbeteringen door te voeren. In overleg met Aston Martin bundelen we meer dan ooit onze krachten om tot concrete oplossingen te komen en deze moeilijke situatie te doorbreken. De muur waar wij hier tegenop zijn gelopen, is hoog. Maar we zullen de uitdaging niet uit de weg gaan."

Ik was euforisch toen ze 'n aantal jaren geleden weer met McLaren gingen samenwerken...wat uitliep op 'n farce.

Toen naar Redbull, wat ik eigenlijk niet zo leuk vond, en daar met Max 4 keer kampioen werden wat ik weer wel leuk vond.

Nu bij Aston Martin en het riedeltje begint weer van voren af aan.
Het heeft 'n paar jaar nodig zeg maar.

Aston Martin Honda F1's new challenge has faced difficulties since the testing phase. But Honda is trying to bounce back with a precedent from its struggles with McLaren.

"It's clear that we're not happy with where we are at the moment," said Yasuharu Watanabe.

"We have identified a lot of areas that we need to focus on before the opening race. Normally, we would have liked to do more laps and collect more data during testing, but unfortunately we faced unforeseen problems. We are currently dealing with them."

From next week onwards, it will be impossible to change the specifications of the power unit in principle, and the homologation (certification) will be reached at the end of the month.

"At the end of the month (March 1), the engine will have to be homologated, so the hardware will be frozen, and based on that premise, we will pursue how to make the power unit function optimally."

"We are strongly pushing to build a collaborative system between the two premier categories of F1 and MotoGP, and we are looking at how we can transfer and share knowledge between the two projects and connect them to achieve success in their respective championships."

50:50 power distribution and electrification challenges Honda appears to be one of the most struggling manufacturers under the current regulations, but there is a technological turning point behind it.

"We had to develop a different internal combustion engine than last time, but the approach to the heat engine itself is the same."

"But now electrification is much more important, and how we generate electricity and how we supply it is key. The 50-to-50 distribution of output is clearly the most important item."

In addition, responding to sustainable fuels is also a new challenge.

"Sustainable fuels are also an additional challenge, and this year we had to integrate it relationship with Aston Martin and the partnership is strong, despite the difficult circumstances.
