Ericsson becomes Sauber's third driver

Sauber has confirmed that Marcus Ericsson will continue to be a part of the team in 2019, holding the role of its third driver. The Hinwil squad confirmed on Tuesday that Antonio Giovinazzi will partner Kimi Raikkonen for the 2019 season.

Ericsson joined Sauber in 2015 after spending a year with the now dilapidated Caterham team. The Swede has raced 75 Grands Prix with Sauber, and will see out the season with them before being replaced by Giovinazzi.

Sauber's financial backers have links to Ericsson, meaning the 27-year-old will continue to be a part of the squad. It also confirmed that Ericsson would act as a brand ambassador for the Swiss outfit, as well as its reserve driver.

I think his demotion was long overdue. He's a lovely chap, but he has been comprehensibly out-performed by every teammate at Sauber. He was the personification of the 'pay driver.'

  • Sorry for Ericsson to loose his seat, despite being backed significantly. Ferrari's seat was given to Antonio, and Sauber chose to give their's to Kimi instead of Marcus, and paid him while doing so.
