Verstappen Recommended Rookie to Red Bull: “Keep an Eye on Him”

Max Verstappen has revealed that he personally encouraged Red Bull to sign Gabriel Bortoleto. The Brazilian talent, currently competing in Formula 2, joined the Red Bull Junior Team earlier this year. With the driver market for 2026 heating up, Bortoleto is already being linked to a future seat alongside Verstappen.

The 2023 Formula 3 champion has impressed during his rapid rise through the junior categories. Several Formula 1 teams were reportedly monitoring his progress, but Red Bull acted quickest. According to Verstappen, that move was no coincidence.

The three-time world champion says he knows Bortoleto well and played a role in guiding him toward Red Bull at an early stage. Verstappen speaks highly of the Brazilian’s mentality, work ethic and long-term potential.

“We Know Each Other Well”

Speaking to F1.com, Verstappen explained how their relationship began. “He has trained in Monaco quite a lot. When I saw him recently, we spoke a lot about his future and the Red Bull programme. I recommended it to him because I think it is the best place for him to develop.”

Verstappen says he spotted Bortoleto’s qualities long before the wider paddock took notice. “I trust his talent. I have said for a long time that he is someone people should follow closely. He has speed, he is calm and he listens well. That combination can take you a long way.”

Bortoleto Aiming for Formula 1

With Bortoleto now part of the Red Bull structure, speculation about his future has intensified. Liam Lawson is currently Verstappen’s teammate for the remainder of the season, but that seat for 2026 remains undecided. Bortoleto is considered a serious candidate.

Verstappen believes the youngster could reach Formula 1 sooner than many expect. “I think he will come very quickly. But he must stay focused and deliver consistently. The pressure inside the Red Bull programme is always high. If you want to reach the top, you have to earn it.”

The Dutchman says he will continue supporting Bortoleto where he can, but insists the final step is up to the driver himself. “He has huge potential. Now he has to show it every weekend.”
