Giovinazzi hails dramatically improved Sauber

Antonio Giovinazzi was full of praise for Sauber's C37 after the in-season Hungary test. The Italian racked up 120 laps for the Swiss team on day two, after driving for Ferrari the day before. The 24-year-old also drove the Sauber earlier this year during the first in-season test at Spain.

And he has noted an impressive display of improvements, claiming that the car performs better in all areas. When asked where the team has made gains, he said: "Just I think downforce overall. Just better everywhere, braking stability, just everywhere.

"But compared to rookie test I did in Barcelona, compared to today, the car is really a big step in front. I’m really happy for this, they’re doing a fantastic job, happy with the car and the team."

Giovinazzi set the fastest time on day one of testing in the Ferrari, and spoke about the speed differences between the Ferrari and Sauber: “Of course it’s another really big step, two seconds from the lap I did yesterday.

"I think also they did a big improvement from the beginning of the year and I spoke about the rookie test in Barcelona. So I think everyone is developing the car but you see the difference compared to Ferrari.”

The Ferrari reserve driver is hoping to obtain a full-time race seat in 2019, with plenty of rumours swirling that he could be joining Sauber. He will have four FP1 sessions in the remainder of the year, in which he says he will need to shine to make an impression.

"For now I need just to do what I’m doing, drive a car, I think was two positive days for myself," he reflected. "Now we’ll see. I still have 4 FP1s with Sauber, at the end of the year I hope I can have the seat I want.

"But because I did a good job it is not for sure I will have the seat next year, everything will change, what I will do is just do my best and will see if it will happen or not."
