Antonio Giovinazzi will once again be in the Formula 1 paddock in China, waiting in the wings with Sauber in case Pascal Wehrlein is deemed unwell to race. The 2016 GP2 runner-up made his Formula 1 debut last week in Melbourne with the Swiss team after Wehrlein declared he was not fit enough to race after his crash at the Race of Champions.
Giovinazzi was signed as a test driver for Ferrari at the start of the year and was not expected to be racing in F1 this year until Wehrlein's sudden announcement. Giovinazzi raced around Melbourne with only half a Grand Prix distance covered in practice and finished the race in twelfth.
There are also suggestions that the Italian could fill in for Sauber for the rest of the season which is a very distant possibility, with a few sources playing an April Fools trick with that headline. However, Giovinazzi will absolutely be in China in case of another sidelining of Wehrlein.
