First images of Williams FW40 have been revealed

Formula One fans have this morning been given their first insight into what the 2017 challengers will look like. Revealed exclusively by Autosport, the images of the latest Williams Martini Racing machine herald a new era for the sport.

2017 marks the beginning of the latest iteration of the sport’s technical regulations and as the first of the season’s contenders breaks cover, the influence of the regulations is most striking on the rear wing which is markedly different in shape to its predecessors.

The reveal came in the form of a video showing computer-generated images of the FW40, which will be driven by F1 veteran Felipe Massa and rookie Lance Stroll this season. The first pre-season test takes place at the Circuit de Catalunya on 27th February 2017.

  • Looks cool, pretty wide.. Front wing is swept back a lot, but what is that mohawk design at the back? That's not a shark fin...

I was expecting more changes.. it just looks like a tweaked FW39 or is it just me?

    • The changes are in line with what has been proposed in new regulations. It is not a major visual overhaul. The changes are coming from the suspension setup, wider tyres changes under the nose, undertray, airflow management in the back and towards the back.

Other changes coming from engine and cooling layout developments.

There still is an appreciable level of visual change but you will need a side by side comparison with last year's car to quantify that. It is not so obvious.

I am intrigued by the Airbox wonder if others will go that route.

  • Looks nice, the sidepods are really neat, a pity they decided to leave that appendage on.
