Sebastian Vettel has admitted he was at fault for the first lap skirmish that took him out of the race and left Nico Rosberg facing the wrong way.
Vettel tagged his compatriot after braking late in an attempt to pass Max Verstappen. The incident destroyed the suspension on his Ferrari and gave Vettel his fourth non-finish of the year.
Rosberg meanwhile managed to recover to third place.
"From inside the car I was to trying get past Max, which was fine, and obviously Nico came back and at that point he couldn’t see me so it is not his fault at all," Vettel admitted. "I can’t do more than apologise to him because it had nothing to do with him and it was the last thing he wanted."
Vettel was branded an "idiot" by Max Versappen after the incident, but Vettel insists that he and Verstappen both made similar approaches to the first corner.
"Clearly I am not going into Turn 1 wanting to take my front suspension off," he said. "If anything there were two idiots."
"Obviously Nico was ahead and he had nothing to do with the battle behind and he came out as one of the biggest losers."
