Sauber boss admits need for reserve after Marcus Erisson near-miss

Sauber team principal Monisha Kaltenborn has admitted for the first time that the team should sign a reserve driver for 2017.

The admission comes after the team's driver Marcus Ericsson was involved in a high-speed cycling accident earlier this week.

Although the Swede escaped serious injury, the incident raised questions within the team as to what they would do if he was unable to race.

"We do not have a reserve driver, so if the injury was more serious we would have had a problem," she said. "Perhaps we would consider an option with Ferrari's reserve drivers, but in any case, we need to resolve this issue for next year."

Raffaele Marciello, Giedo van der Garde, Sergey Sirotkin, Adderly Fong, and Esteban Gutierrez have all held similar roles at the team in recent years while former Sauber driver and then-McLaren reserve filled in for Sergio Perez when he couldn't race for the team due to injury in 2011.
