Nico Rosberg topped the third and final practice session in Hungary by a mere two thousandths of a second and Red Bull applied the pressure on Mercedes.
Rosberg's time of 1 minute, 20.261 seconds put him ahead of both Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo. Lewis Hamilton was fourth, ahead of the Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel.
Fernando Alonso was a strong seventh in the McLaren, with Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez in eighth and ninth.
Jolyon Palmer's dismal weekend finally appeared to be turning a corner as he rounded out the top ten, completing 19 laps.
