Mercedes top first free practice in Hungary

Lewis Hamilton topped the opening practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading team mate Nico Rosberg in a Mercedes one-two in a session that stayed mostly dry, despite starting in damp conditions.

Hamilton's time of 1 minute 21.347 seconds was 0.237 seconds faster than Rosberg and over sixth tenths of a second faster than his pole position time from last year's race.

Ferrari were next up in third and fourth with Sebastian Vettel ahead of Raikkonen, 1.6 seconds behind Hamilton.

Red Bull ensured the top three teams at the moment locked out the top six positions with Daniel Ricciardo in fifth, just under three tenths of a second ahead of Max Verstappen.

Fernando Alonso, who had a spin in the session after struggling with rear grip was an impressive seventh, one spot ahead of team mate Jenson Button with Hass' Romain Grosjean and Sergio Perez of Force India rounding out the top 10.

Lap times on slick tyres were not attempted until around 20 minutes into the session, with Valtteri Bottas being the first driver to venture out on the dry rubber, he eventually finished the session in 13th, behind Nico Hulkenberg and team mate Felipe Massa.

Free Practice drivers for Haas and Renault, Charles Leclerc and Esteban Ocon performed well, setting the 16th and 18th fastest times.

Jolyon Palmer in the other Renault only completed six laps, a sensor problem bringing an early end to his session.
