Formula One has made a step backwards with regard to the safety of the sport in Baku. That is the view of McLaren driver Jenson Button, who has criticised a number of dangerous areas with little runoff and the entrance to the pits.
His comments come after Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso said they had no safety concerns ahead of F1's first race in Azerbaijan this weekend.
"It's like we have taken a step backwards and I do not know why," said Button. "Perhaps the intention was that the circuit would run the other way, it is what it is. It's a shame, because the track looks good, the circuit is in good condition and the layout pleases me. There are pieces that can be really exciting for us drivers. "
"They should just address a few points. Some corners worry me. We work hard to improve safety and then you come here, corners without any runoff such as turns three, seven, and 14. Turn seven has three TecPro-Barriers and then a concrete wall. They make not much difference, there is a building there. The safety of this circuit is unfortunately really a bummer. "
