Jerez Report - Day 2: Button shines for McLaren

Day 2 got underway this morning at 8am, with Pirelli deciding to move the wet-weather test that was scheduled for Friday forward to today due to the overnight rain that had left the track damp.

McLaren's Jenson Button was the first to break the unearthly silence, closely followed by the Williams of Valtteri Bottas and Caterham of Marcus Ericcson who all completed installation laps.

It was however announced early on that Hamilton would not be running due to a parts shortage after his crash yesterday.

All of the Renault-powered teams were still suffering from issues, with Toro Rosso failing to complete a single lap. Sister team Red Bull and Caterham also had limited running, we believe in part due to the problems with the Renault power unit (see seperate story).

The red-flag came out twice during the day, courtesy of Sauber's Esteban Gutierrez going into the gravel at Turn 6 and Sergio Perez in his Force India stopping at the end of the main straight just before Turn 1.

It was a good day however for Mercedes and Ferrari, with Rosberg and Raikkonen completing a total of 144 laps between them and gaining some valuable knowledge and understanding of their 2014 cars.

Jenson Button topped the timesheets for today with a laptime that was over +0.6 secs quicker than Kimi Raikkonen and +1.1 secs ahead of Vatteri Bottas in his Williams-Mercedes.

Marussia's made a late appearance in the day, but sadly it was only their truck arriving with the MR03 that is expected to be on-track tomorrow morning.
