Pastor Maldonado has revealed that he had a chance to race in Formula 1 in 2017 but turned the seat down due to it not being a competitive one. Prior to the 2016 season, the Venezuelan lost his seat at Renault to Kevin Magnussen as his sponsor, PDVSA could not supply efficient funds.

The one-time race winner has since spoken out about how he had an offer to race in Formula 1 this year, but he did not say with which team: "I had an offer to drive in F1 in 2017. I. However, I chose not to do it, because I had no guarantee that it would be a competitive car. If I do something, I do it right."

Maldonado made his debut in Formula 1 in 2011 and raced all the way through to 2015, spending three years at Williams and two at Lotus. The highlight of his career is undoubtedly the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix where against all odds, he took his one and only victory in Formula 1.

"Sad" to hear that F1's own red turtle shell didnt manage to get a seat. Perhaps to up the action factor Liberty could force a team to give him a seat....

Why do you need a competitive car when all you're going to do is crash it?

  • While that one win was really cool, the rest of his record doesnt justify having him on board, and now he doesnt even have the funds to be a pay driver.

  • Is he telling the truth, or having a laugh like Timo Glock did?
