Bernie Ecclestone en een aantal teambazen kwamen gisteren in Londen bijeen om de Grand Prix van Bahrein te bespreken. Ook uit het oliestaatje zelf schoof een afvaardiging aan. Tijdens de lunch spraken alle partijen hun steun voor het doorgaan van het evenement uit.
Aanwezig waren onder meer Red Bull Racing-teambaas Christian Horner, Mercedes-directeur Nick Fry, Williams-teambaas Frank Williams en McLaren-teambaas Martin Whitmarsh. Ecclestone: Die berichten over afgelasting zijn allemaal onzin. We gaan gewoon naar Bahrein, als ze ons nog willen ontvangen. Serieus, de pers moet zich maar eens koest houden en bij de feiten blijven in plaats van verhalen verzinnen.
Horner vertrouwde James Allen toe: De Formule 1 is een sport en we hebben altijd met veel plezier geracet in Bahrein. De Grand Prix staat op de kalender, en de FIA en de promotors achten het juist en veilig om daar te racen, dan doen we dat. De FIA heeft ons verzekerd dat zij tevreden zijn over de situatie. Als je aan een kampioenschap begint, stap je in om aan alle evenementen deel te nemen en we kijken allemaal uit naar de race in Bahrein.
Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, circuitdirecteur in Bahrein, voegt toe: Wij zijn zeer opgewonden. De Grand Prix verbindt ons kleine land met de rest van de wereld. Tijdens het raceweekend leven we als land even boven onze stand en dat maakt ons trots. De Grand Prix is een groot evenement, met de daarbij behorende veiligheidsmaatregelen. We hebben de draad opgepikt na de onfortuinlijke gebeurtenissen van vorig jaar en de rentree van de Grand Prix is daar een bewijs van.
De coureurs houden zich gedeisd, op één man na. Van Marussia-rijder Timo Glock hoeft een Grand Prix in Bahrein niet. Waarom zouden we ons blootstellen aan onnodig risico? Als ik het voor het zeggen had, dan zouden we niet gaan, aldus de Duitser in Auto Motor und Sport.

Wonderful. It is just a shame that the final doubts about the place were not swept away with invitations to the event for Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, the two major human rights organisations in the world. But since when was Bernie Ecclestone an expert in human rights? He knows how to make billions, and good for him, but I am not sure he is the right person to pass judgement on the political unrest inside Bahrain. Are we to believe that the tens of thousands who turned out on the streets a year ago complaining about the regime are now satisfied with the government of the country, particularly when they know from an independent report the things that the authorities did to people who opposed them?
I should add that I have no doubt that the race IS designed to bring hope to the country and that there ARE moves being made to make progress towards getting Bahrain back on the right track, but this does not mean that the opposition will just sit there and do nothing; nor that the authorities will not use excessive force to deal with anyone daring to disrupt the event. I stand by my belief that by going to Bahrain at this time F1 is putting its head into a noose and hoping for the best. It is also politicising the sport when it does not need to do so. And it is a huge risk because protest can come in many different forms. It does not have to be pitched battles on the streets. Protest can be blocking access roads to the venue, having a sit-down protest on the grid, or following the example of Fidel Castro back in the 1950s when his men kidnapped the World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio and held him prisoner until the race weekend was over.
I fervently hope that there will be no trouble because the sport does not need such bad publicity, but at the same time I do not think it is right for F1 to swan around giving the impression that all is well, if just up the road there are people trading tear gas, Molotov cocktails and bullets on account of the F1 circus being there.
Those who have the power (and the responsibility) to take decisions about the sport, have made their choices. They must now accept the consequences of those choices. The Formula One group decides on the calendar, and the FIA decides on what is good for the sport. If they get it wrong then the people responsible for those decisions must be held accountable.\"
Timo Glock is net als mijn zusje vroeger: we hebben met z\'n allen (7 man) besloten om naar het strand te gaan, en dan komt zij ineens: \"maar ik wil toch liever naar het zwembad\".
Laat Bernie zijn banaan maar opsteken in Bahrein,... Er lopen zotten genoeg rond ginder die zijn feestje eenvoudig kunnen verknallen en daar is geen security, leger of mogendheid tegen opgewassen. Met duizenden zijn ze teruggekomen uit Pakistan, Irak, Afghanistan en andere leuke oorden als Israël en zo. Wie oorlog zaait, zal oorlog krijgen. En ook al lijkt er vrede er lopen altijd gekken rond zoals in Toulouse die doordraaien en besluiten er hun dagje van te maken. Wees dan maar zeker dat je liever op een andere plaats aanwezig was. Goed nieuws voor elke F1 fan.. Er zijn van die pipo\'s die hem liever niet verreden zien worden omdat hun favoriete team het daar moeilijk gaat krijgen.. En hebben er dan liever een gat van 4 weken tussen.. Hoe zielig is dat...
@L. Hamiltenon: 4 weken geldt als toegift voor ieder team, dus zoveel ruimte zal een team op achterstand wel niet kunnen goedmaken, gezien het pak dat nu al zo dicht op mekaar zit...
