Williams and Caterham need to re-design

Caterham and Williams have been told they may have to change the exhaust layout on their cars – the CT03 and the FW35.

Both teams are using the ‘coanda effect’ exhaust layouts, but break the FIA’s rules. Williams’ technical director Mike Coughlan believed that the Williams was legal because the vanes on the FW35 are in two parts, whereas the Caterham’s is in one piece.

The FIA approached Williams after their car had been released this morning.

Even though they have been told that their ‘coanda effect’ exhaust layouts are illegal, both team can continue to use them in pre-season testing. If the teams haven’t changed them by the Australian Grand Prix on the 17th of March, the FIA will let the matter go to the race stewards.
