Williams targeting major upgrades over minor enhancements

Williams is looking to bring major car upgrades to races rather than small improvements, according to driver George Russell.

Russell says Williams must be more patient than its rivals as it waits for the big upgrades, as bringing small parts to each weekend won't do much to aid its current situation.

MOREQuestions ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix

The Grove outfit currently finds itself competing at the back of the field, as it works to fix fundamental issues that have plagued the FW42 it since pre-season testing.

"We know what we have in store to bring to the car, but these things take time," Russell said. "To make a front wing, it takes eight to ten weeks, the same with the floor.

"For us, we've almost got to be more patient than the other teams because we want to bring something greater than just little things here or there. That's not going to bring much performance.

"We're still testing some things at the moment and we're getting some very good information back. I do believe there will be a point where we can fight with everybody."

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve one of the 'most daunting' circuits

After the opening six races of the season, Williams hasn't come close to scoring points, with Russell usually battling for the final positions against teammate Robert Kubica.

Arriving in Montreal, Russell, who has not yet raced at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, believes that confidence will be key to extracting time from the track, which he describes as "daunting".

"I think confidence is going to be a huge factor. It's a daunting track, up there with the levels of Monaco or Suzuka. Confidence is definitely important.

"The thing I learned from Monaco which really helped me in the race was getting laps under my belt. The reason my pace was so strong in the race is because I was doing laps and laps and laps.

"The car wasn't good, but was consistent and I knew what it was going to do lap by lap. It's important not to make any mistakes and maximise track time and try to nail it for Saturday."

  • probably a good idea, but at the same time, won't they fall behind waiting?

    • They could, but they are already behind, so they have nothing to lose on this approach.
