Robert Kubica admits that he is much more comfortable driving a Formula 1 car now than he was 12 months ago. The Pole took part in the in-season test at Hungary for Wiliams this week, one year on from when he made his comeback testing for Renault.
The 2008 Canadian Grand Prix winner was confirmed as Williams' development driver in January and he has since been working with the team to improve its current position. Pushing for a race seat for 2019, the 33-year-old says that everything is easier 12 months on from his first official F1 test since 2010.
"Twelve months ago I was here for the first time with Renault, and after 12 months I can say everything is easier! One year ago everything was new for me, especially with the new generation of Formula 1, and now everything is more familiar, easier and I'm more confident. So all good."
When asked how his Hungary test with Williams went, he said: "It was all OK. We did have a bit of a mixed program with some data collection for next year, and trying to understand how we can make the car work better for next year's car. But we did do a few runs with a current specification car as well. So the feeling was good."
Towards the end of the second day of running, the Williams car was spotted covered in different colours of flo-viz paint, to measure air flow around the car. With Williams set to run a new livery next season following the departure of title sponsor Martini, Kubica joked that the new paint was a trial for its fresh 2019 livery.
"I don't know, it's too early to say. It was just more for the aero guys to get more information about it and what it does to the rest of the car and how the airflow is going to be distributed differently. We did end up also with trying a new livery on the last run with new paint. It looked nice, so maybe a change for next year!"
