Mercedes could help solve Williams cooling problem

Williams may be reaching out to Mercedes in a bid to end its 2018 car crisis. Under the technical leadership of former Mercedes chief Paddy Lowe, Williams' 2018 car is among the very slowest on the grid.

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports that a major issue is the cooling system. "Paddy Lowe wanted to copy the cooling system of his former team Mercedes, but the concept is complicated and apparently Williams made a mistake," correspondent Michael Schmidt explained. "Now the bodywork has to be opened up completely and that costs a lot of downforce."

Schmidt said it might tie in with a paddock conservation spotted in China between Lance Stroll's father Lawrence and Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. A Williams engineer is quoted as saying: "If we solve the cooling problem, we'll gain 8 tenths in one fell swoop." (GMM)

  • The problem with copying someone is that generally that someone has already moved on by the time you've exacted that copy. Copying a philosophy? That could work, but a direct copy? Mostly not.

Says alot about lowe, and expectations. As you said already moved on, even worse when you copy something that you dont understand and have to ask that person what you copied wrong, lol

The big problem for Williams is Paddy lowe, rofl not sure how that gets sorted? may be mr stroll senior can help ;p

    • I dont necessarily even think Lowe is the problem, the problem is taking one guy from a team thats very successful as a whole, and expecting the same success from just that one bloke. For all we know, Lowe is doing lots with little resource. 'tis the same story as when Allison joined Merc'. Allison has likely not done a bad job, but remember how Ferrari was supposed to be falling apart when he left? The Scuderia doesnt exactly look like a train wreck, does it? And people who says Red Bull's success is all down to Newey are severely understating the prowess of the rest of Red Bull.

  • Can Mercedes fix the deeply entrenched philosophy of mediocrity at Williams? Because the cooling problem is small potatoes compared to that
