Williams deny Alonso link

Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams has denied the rumours surrounding Fernando Alonso and a potential future at Williams. At the Belgian Grand Prix, it emerged in the paddock that the Grove team had laid out an offer for the Spaniard for 2018.

Alonso is currently deeply unhappy at McLaren as its engine supplier Honda is failing to produce a rapid and competitive engine. With the double world champion's deal with McLaren running out at the end of the year, Alonso also mentioned that he would only stay on with McLaren if it abandoned Honda.

However, Williams denied the rumours linking him with a move to the team, telling Bild newspaper: "I read that with astonishment. I know nothing about it. I never negotiated with him - never sat at a table with him," she insisted.

Williams also dismissed suggestions Alonso's huge 2017 salary would be paid by billionaire Lawrence Stroll, who wants the very best teammate to pair with his son Lance next year: "Forget it," Williams responded. "Mr Stroll is a successful businessman because he does not throw money around like that."

She is a mommy now! I'm sure Paddy did not want to bother her with these details....

She does have a sense of humor, with that last remark. I wonder if she was able to keep a straight face while saying it

  • Yeah, I sort of doubt Williams can afford him.
