Tost: "Sainz departure rumours arise from boredom"

Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost says that the rumours regarding Carlos Sainz's departure from Renault come from the Formula 1 paddock being bored. Before the British Grand Prix, there was a rumour that Sainz would be departing the Red Bull programme and joining Renault for Hungary.

The move never materialised and the rumour was branded as being completely untrue. Speaking about that particular section of gossip, Tost says he doesn't know where it came from:  "I don’t know where this rumour is coming from that he was going to be driving in Budapest for I don’t know which team," he said

"This is Formula 1, you see people sitting around, it’s boring for them, and then they come up with some stories or some dreams or whatever. Then they talk with one another and then it starts going around. The fact is that Carlos is driving with us, he has a Red Bull contract and regarding the future is a decision Red Bull will take because they have the contract."

Red Bull took up an extra year in Carlos Sainz's contract, but have admitted that he will be let go if a team is willing to pay €8million. Daniil Kvyat is unconfirmed for 2018, as Pierre Gasly hopes to make his F1 debut with the team next year.

Red Bull's program is quickly becoming one where drivers get burned and discarded unless you are an indisputable superstar. Pretty bruising relationship. I don't see drivers from McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes have the issues Red Bull has. Even with the stupid junior team.

  • They arise from the fact he sounds very unhappy every time he is on team radio... And the fact he can't fulfill his potential in a junior team

Fully agree and I'd guess that's entirely down to the mad doctor playing "God".

    • Yeah, Marko has far too much control. The problem isnt necessarily unique to Red Bull, I mean look at Mercedes with Ocon and Wehrlein, but they do definitely have more problem with it.
