McLaren team boss Eric Boullier has further heaped pressure on Honda by blasting the failure of Fernando Alonso’s engine as "absolutely not good enough." The failure comes in a week where McLaren CEO Zak Brown has already criticised Honda's 2017 effort said that "we have a plan B, we have a plan C, we’ve got plans," if the position of Honda becomes untenable and they are forced to search for a new engine provider.
The failure came as Alonso was set to claim McLaren's first points of the season, lying tenth with only two laps remaining. However, it was not to be as Alonso eventually retired from the race, with teammate Stoffel Vandoorne only managing to claim 14th in Canada with the Honda engine proving both noncompetitive and unreliable.

"After so much toil and heartache, even that single point would have felt like a victory, and then came yet another gut-wrenching failure," Boullier said. "It’s difficult to find the right words to express our disappointment, our frustration and, yes, our sadness. So I’ll say only this. It’s simply, and absolutely, not good enough."
Alonso added, clearly frustrated, as he has been for most of the time he has spent in his later stint at McLaren: "As a driver, we try to come here and drive as fast as we can, so missing out on that point is disappointing especially for the guys, who have been working so much day and night, preparing the car, preparing the strategy and taking care of every single detail.Our chassis feels quite strong in the corners, but we are being overtaken by everyone in the middle on the straights. It’s tough times."
