Wolff not commenting on McLaren-Mercedes 2018 deal

Toto Wolff has refused to comment on the suggestions that Mercedes are set to supply McLaren with power units next season. McLaren ran with Mercedes power before switching to Honda in 2015. However, three years on, Honda have not made any inroads on the other manufacturers.

Zak Brown announced recently that Honda had to change rapidly if the partnership was to continue, casting doubt over a McLaren-Honda partnership for 2018. Honda has already secured a deal with Sauber next season, but they could lose out to McLaren.

"At the moment I do not want to participate in these rumours and discussions," Wolff, the Mercedes chief, told Bild newspaper. "It could be detrimental to Honda," he added.

After his latest engine failure, Fernando Alonso said after the Canadian Grand Prix: "The speed difference on the straights with the other cars is dangerous here. The others pass as though you're standing on a motorway. It's not just that we lost a point here. We lost another engine, which means I will be last in Azerbaijan."

  • I think thats good, its far too early to comment on it, and for all we know Mercedes could very well deny them an engine. Lauda will certainly try to veto a decision to supply them, he has stated this very clearly, and I dont think that will change. McLaren is no doubt in talks with them, but I dont think it'll happen. If McLaren will switch supplier, its more likely to be a choice between Renault and Ferrari.
