Last week, it was announced that Antonio Giovinazzi would be getting seven outings for Haas F1 in the first free practice sessions later this season. Kevin Magnussen will be forced to give up his seat six out of those seven times.
It was previously questioned why the Dane will be forced to give up so much of his practice time in contrast to teammate Romain Grosjean, and it has now been revealed that it is due to the contract of the former Renault and McLaren driver,
"The reason Kevin is missing more than Romain (Grosjean) is merely because of our agreements," Haas chief Guenther Steiner told Ekstra Bladet. "Romain's contract was done in the summer of 2015, and Kevin's in autumn 2016. Kevin understood this from the very beginning and has shown a willingness to put the team first ever since he started with us."
Giovinazzi will be using these outings to impress and attempt to secure a full-time seat in 2018 for the team. Currently, the 2016 GP2 runner-up is the Ferrari reserve driver and already has two Grand Prix starts to his name, debuting for Sauber at the start of the year.
