Vandoorne remaining positive through McLaren-Honda struggle

Stoffel Vandoorne has vowed to stay positive amid the current McLaren-Honda struggle. Vandoorne, who is in his first full season in Formula 1 has spent much of his time this year at the back of the grid.

The Belgian has been heavily outperformed by Fernando Alonso who, last time out in qualifying, made it to P7 on the grid while Vandoorne failed to make it out of Q1.

Vandoorne's best finish so far in 2017 has been P13 in Australia (although that was the last classified position). Last season, Vandoorne scored a point in his one and only race in Bahrain but hasn't come close to matching that result so far this year.

"The engine is not decisive in Monaco, or at least less than other tracks. Maybe that's to our advantage because we are on the right track with our chassis. I'm hopeful that we can show another level this weekend and more can be competitive than the previous races."

"We have set no concrete goals because this race is so unpredictable. We must make the most of every chance we get and hopefully see the rewards. Many people wonder if I'm frustrated because the situation seems hopeless. The answer is no, I'm not frustrated. I stay positive."

Vandoorne also said that it was the first time in his whole career that he's been in a difficult spot and the focus going into a race weekend hasn't been on winning.

"This is the first time in my career that I've experienced a difficult time. It feels very different than what I'm used to, as the focus is on other things than winning, such as making the most of a difficult situation. Eventually, I will be stronger. I am confident in my abilities, which is the most important thing in this situation. "
