Alonso claims McLaren chassis is "one of the best"

Fernando Alonso claims that McLaren's chassis is one of the best on the grid, and the car would be performing well if not for the underperforming Honda engine in the back of the car.

"With the power deficit that we have, we have proved in these races that we have one of the best chassis in the championship," the Spaniard is quoted by AS newspaper.

McLaren-Honda has had just one finish this year, coming in the form of Stoffel Vandoorne who crossed the line in Australia in last place. The team's woes continued in Bahrain, as they were forced to change the power unit in Alonso's car.

"It's a shame that we have to change the engine for reliability and not when it is out of kilometres, but that's what we have right now," he said. "It was going to be a difficult race, and now it will be even more difficult."

Alonso has spoken out about how he is looking for a competitive car for 2018 and with many doubting that McLaren-Honda can leap to the field in less than a year, speculation has begun that he is looking for a way put of the team.
