Pascal Wehrlein has admitted that he is still feeling pain in is back in Bahrain, despite being cleared fit to compete this weekend. The German will take part in his first race of the season, after being sidelined for the first two events in Australia and China.
In January, Wehrlein rolled his car at the Race of Champions but shrugged off any major problems. However, after driving in free practice at the season opener in Melbourne, he declared himself unfit to race and was replaced by Italian Antonio Giovinazzi.
It was revealed that he had suffered hairline fractures in his back, and the muscles weren't strong enough to deal with the G-Forces being applied to his body with this new generation of cars: "I feel it, but in the car it doesn't really bother me. I think I will be fine in the race. Of course, it's hard, but it's hard for everyone.
Wehrlein qualified an impressive P13 in a Sauber that was predicted to struggle through the season. Speaking about his expectations for the race, he says he will do his best to get the maximum result for his team, but also enjoy himself while doing so.
"About the performance? I don't really know what to expect because my longest run this year was I think 18 or 20 laps, so I don't really know how the car behaves in a race distance. I will try to maximise the result, do my best and have fun."
