Jean Alesi thinks Felipe Massa's return is a mistake

Former Formula One driver Jean Alesi believes that a return to the sport for Felipe Massa would be a mistake.

Massa announced his retirement at the 2016 Italian Grand Prix, which saw emotions running high. These emotions were repeated at the Brazilian Grand Prix and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and it seemed like an almost perfect send off for the racing veteran.

However when Nico Rosberg announced his shock retirement, and Valtteri Bottas was in-frame to replace him, it emerged that Williams were interested in re-signing him.

The possibility looks to be a reality now, but Alesi thinks this is a big mistake for Massa.

“Honestly to me this is a mistaken decision,” said Alesi in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport today. “Felipe has stopped, he’s turned a page.

“And what if he discovers that the Williams isn’t quick?”

Alesi also spoke about Rosberg's sudden and shocking retirement.

“To start with I thought the same as Lauda; I was surprised and angry. Let’s say I didn’t really get the logic of announcing your retirement the same week in which you won the title.

“But then I thought about it some more and I thought of Senna, of how he said he would drive for Williams for nothing and how hard he worked to make it happen and then he died. Perhaps Nico just didn’t feel like racing any more.”
