Marcus Ericsson has admitted he was surprised when it was revealed to him that Sauber would be using year-old engines in 2017.
The Swede, who is expected to remain with the Swiss team, questioned the decision at first, but was later convinced it was the right way to go.
"When I first heard about it I was questioning it quite a lot," Ericsson is quoted by F1i. "I was like: ‘Is that really the right way to go?’"
"But then I spoke to both guys here at the track and guys from the factory and the reasoning with the really big change to the regulations and cars next year, and with us being quite a small team the way we can focus a lot more on really developing the car for next year," he continued. "Knowing what package we will have, what power unit we will have and the cooling and all that stuff, it makes sense to me."
I trust the guys because they have all been like: ‘This is the way to go’. It’s not been a money decision or anything, they think it’s the best way for the team to go next year," he added.
Toro Rosso have been using year-old Ferrari engines this year, a after a strong start to the season, their performance has waned in the second half of the the year.
