Former McLaren team coordinator Jo Ramirez has said that he thought the team would be fighting for podiums by now.
The Mexican, who worked for the British team between 1984-2001 said that although the team have improved on last year, he expected more from them at this point in the year.
"It's true they are better (than before)," Ramirez said, "but we must also bear in mind that this is a circuit than benefits them.
"I think at this stage of the season and on a track like this they should already be fighting for the podium," he added.
Despite still not being able to fight for podiums and wins, Ramirez at least can see the step forward from last season.
"It's clear that this year has nothing to do with last year," he said. "At least they are able to compete with the other cars."
Driver Fernando Alonso has often backed the team in public but more recently has began to voice his frustration with Formula One. Ramirez hopes that he perseveres and sees the McLaren Honda project through
"I hope Fernando continues to trust the team and does not lose motivation because eventually they will get there," he said, "even though it will not be easy."
