FP1: Hamilton edges Alonso in sunny Monza

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Mercedes' Nico Rosberg gave their teams hope that Red Bull might get a run for their money at Formula One racing’s 'cathedral of speed' Monza, during first practice on Friday morning, as they held runaway Belgian Grand Prix victor Sebastian Vettel down to fourth place.

Hamilton topped the times for Mercedes with 1m 25.565s, 0.035s faster than crowd favourite Alonso who took his Ferrari round in 1m 25.600s. Rosberg was third in the second Mercedes on 1m 25.704s with Vettel on 1m 25.753s. Lotus's Kimi Raikkonen completed those below the 1m 26s barrier with 1m 25.941s. All of them ran Pirelli's hard tyre.

Sergio Perez and Jenson Button had a fillip for McLaren, as the company celebrates its 50th birthday, with sixth and seventh fastest times on 1m 26.007s and 1m 26.035s respectively. Button, however, is being investigated for unauthorised use of DRS. Right behind them, Mark Webber recorded 1m 26.103s in the second Red Bull, then came Pastor Maldonado in the lead Williams on 1m 26.149s, Jean-Eric Vergne's Toro Rosso on 1m 26.155s, and Esteban Gutierrez's Sauber on 1m 26.194s.

Romain Grosjean's Lotus was 12th on 1m 26.295s, chased by Daniel Ricciardo's Toro Rosso on 1m 26.387s. Felipe Massa came next with 1m 26.449s for Ferrari, with Paul di Resta taking his Force India round in 1m 26.594s ahead of Valtteri Bottas's Williams on 1m 26.802s.

James Calado made his official F1 debut in Adrian Sutil's Force India and did well to lap within half a second of Di Resta. The GP2 driver had one minor off after missing the first chicane, and completed his morning’s work in 17th place on 1m 27.041s. Nico Hulkenberg was hampered throughout the session by gearbox problems in his Sauber and was 18th on 1m 27.224s.

Charles Pic was Caterham's lead runner with 1m 27.818s ahead of Marussia's Max Chilton on 1m 27.869s. Heikki Kovalainen took over Giedo van der Garde's CT03 to record 1m 28.192s, while Rodolfo Gonzalez ran Jules Bianchi’s regular Marussia to post 1m 29.526s. (Formula1.com)
