FP1: Jenson Button claims first top spot in Australia

The first free practice in Melbourne didn't provide much answers about the order of the teams, as the session started with a wet track that dried up at the end. That caused the times to go faster and faster, with Jenson Button in the end proving to be the best with a 1:27.560. Lewis Hamilton ended as second, in front of Michael Schumacher on third.

Felipe Massa spun into the gravel at Turn 9 after braking with the left side of his car in the grass. Jean-Eric Vergne did the same earlier at Turn 15, but he was able to continue. Kimi Raikkonen still isn't happy with the steering feeling of the Lotus, with the team changing the steering column in his E20. Troubles at HRT, with Pedro de la Rosa not driving one lap and Narain Karthikeyan stopping on track with high engine temperatures.
