Robert Kubica has confirmed that he is targeting a comeback to Formula 1. This week, the Pole set 115 laps in Valencia in a private test for Renault. Since then, rumours have been swirling around that he is in place to replace Jolyon Palmer for next season.

Kubica last raced in F1 in 2010. Prior to the 2011 season, he was injured in a rally accident and was forced to undergo hours of intense surgery. He had a partial amputation on his forearm which has since limited his abilities in the cockpit of a car.

"For sure it's kind of a new start for me," the 32-year-old said. "I don't know what it will bring, but definitely it's a nice feeling to know I can drive an F1 car after such a difficult period and having my limitations.

"To know I can drive the car and I can drive the car on good pace and I can drive the car for an entire Grand Prix distance is something which makes me happy and proud.

"Once I have done this test I would like to test more. It doesn't depend only on my side, but I will keep working and hopefully one day I will have a chance to go forward and step-by-step maybe have [a] proper comeback."

Before his Formula 1 test, Kubica had tested Formula E and GP3 cars. He was also scheduled to race in the World Endurance Championship this year with ByKolles Racing but pulled himself out of that project. Many regarded Kubica as a future world championship in the five years he raced in F1, taking one victory and twelve podiums.

How would he get on in a current spec car though? All the drivers say it is more physically demanding this year. Much as I'd like to see his return I still think it's a big ask.

    • Yeah, I have similar concerns. His injuries could very well worsen due to the pressures from the car. He is talented, but I just dont think it'll happen.
