Former Formula 1 driver Roberto Merhi will take part in testing for Formula 2 squad Campos, in a bid to earn a full race seat for the 2017 season. Pre-season testing for Formula 2 kicks off in Barcelona next week.
Merhi, who drove for Manor Mercedes in F1 in the 2015 season, had a personal best twelfth after competing in thirteen races. The Spaniard had a stint in LMP2 in the World Endurance Championship, but now hopes to return to competitive single seater racing.
A statement from Campos read: "Campos Racing and Roberto Merhi are working together to confirm his presence in the new FIA Formula Two championship as soon as possible as it is the right decision to relaunch his career.
"Ross Brawn, the new racing boss of Formula One, stressed that F2 winners will step up to F1, so the renamed FIA Formula 2 championship will give him a big chance."
Merhi would not be the first to race in F1 and then step down to the feeder series. More recently, Romain Grosjean competed in seven F1 Grand Prix for Renault in 2009, before stepping to GP2, as it was called then. Grosjean secured a full race seat at Lotus in 2012, and secured ten podiums in his four years at the team.
