Williams announces major change and unveils updated iconic team name

Williams has made a big announcement ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The legendary British team will appear on next year’s grid under a slightly new name: Atlassian Williams F1 Team. While the change is subtle, it marks a symbolic step in the team’s modern evolution.

Nearly five decades of racing heritage

Williams has been part of the Formula 1 grid for 48 years, earning an iconic status in motorsport history. Over that time, the team has claimed nine Constructors’ Championships and seven Drivers’ titles with legends like Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, and Jacques Villeneuve. Under the leadership of Sir Frank Williams, the Grove-based outfit became one of the sport’s greatest dynasties, though its performance declined in the 21st century.

The Williams family eventually sold the team to Dorilton Capital, ushering in a new era. Under current team principal James Vowles, progress has been steady. Carlos Sainz secured a memorable podium in Azerbaijan earlier this year, helping Williams to an impressive fifth place in the Constructors’ standings.

New name, same identity

Currently competing as Atlassian Williams Racing, the team will officially rebrand to Atlassian Williams F1 Team for the 2026 season. The decision represents a refinement rather than a complete overhaul. Williams will continue to be known simply as Williams within the paddock and among fans.

Modernized logo

The team will also introduce a refreshed logo next season. The iconic ‘W’ remains central to its identity but will receive a modern twist inspired by the original design Sir Frank Williams introduced when the team first joined Formula 1. The update symbolizes a blend of nostalgia and forward momentum, honoring Williams’ past while embracing its future.

Vowles: “A new chapter inspired by our legacy”

Team principal James Vowles expressed pride in the team’s renewed identity:  “As a team, we’re inspired by our past, but we’re also passionately focused on the future. We’re determined to write a new championship chapter in the Williams story. This evolved identity reflects who we are, where we’re heading, and reconnects our title-winning legacy with a growing global audience that didn’t experience our dominance firsthand.”

With a modernized look, growing confidence, and a clear sense of direction, Williams aims to rise once again, not just as a team rich in history, but as a contender ready to make new history in Formula 1.
