Sainz not concerned about F1 future

Carlos Sainz says that he is not worried about what his future in Formula 1 will look like. The Spaniard is expected to hold a key role in the 2018 'silly season', as he is likely to take up a seat at Red Bull should Daniel Ricciardo leave the team at the end of the year.

But Sainz says that his plans following the 2018 season are the least of his concerns. The former Toro Rosso driver will take part in his first full season for Renault this year, having joined the French manufacturer towards the end of last year, replacing a struggling Jolyon Palmer.

"In this situation, my head is always on the present. My future at the moment is the least of my concerns," Sainz said. "I know if I have a good year, a lot of opportunities will come, so it is better to focus on the present than ahead.

"So I will focus on my best for Renault because this is what they deserve. It is impossible to know what the future will bring and what will happen at the first race, having not tried the new car, so it is all about focusing on the present."

Sainz is only with Renault on a loan deal from Red Bull, making a return to the energy drink family a possibility. The 23-year-old will be testing the new Renault R.S. 18 next week in Barcelona, and is hoping the team can build on its form from 2017.

"It is always difficult but I think the team has progressed during the winter," Sainz said. "I don’t know how much, but I am convinced the team has done great steps to move forward this year. We now depend on the others and to know how they have done, but we’re convinced we’ve made a step forward."
