Johansson advises Alonso to stay at McLaren

Former F1 driver Stefan Johansson has said that Fernando Alonso, who is known to be undecided about his racing future beyond 2017, should stay with the struggling McLaren-Honda project for one more year. The Swede justified his belief by citing the limited F1 options the Spaniard would have in 2018, as well as the potential for Honda to make big improvements with its engine.

In an interview published on his official website, Johansson said: "It looks difficult for anyone at the top end of the driver market to move much in the current situation. If Alonso were to leave McLaren, where would he go? I doubt neither Mercedes or Ferrari have a seat open for him, Red Bull is already full.

"In my opinion it would be better to stay patient one more year with McLaren as I still believe they will eventually get it right rather than go with any of the options that are left, of which only Renault would make any sense. If McLaren were to ditch Honda and go with a different engine, I think Hungary already showed that they will be a serious contender almost right away.

"There are only two obvious teams for anyone who wants to move and the chances a seat will open in either of them are very small in my opinion."

Bottas is far from poor pal. Mercedes are right to not put Alonso and Hamilton alongside eachother. As good as it would be for the fans, their relationship would be disastrous like it was in 2007.

  • Toto says he is a "racer" but he's too scared to put Alonso alongside Lewis, which is a huge shame as no matterwho won, it would be an amazing battle.

but no.. he'd rather have Bottas who is pretty useless tbh, his racecraft is rather poor and his race pace is very hit and miss.

    • Alonso will destroy and end turdshit boy's career for good, no more uncle Ron around to bend over backwards and make the entire team work against Alonso. However Alonso still wasn't beaten for points in 2007 lol. Toto is a piece of shaite who talks crap for the sake hitting the headlines. He and the rest of Mercedes have no balls to go against the BLM brigade.

there is no point signing alonso.
you might get one or maybe two years out of him. you might get three months.
bottas might stay for ten and is more likely to stay after a down season with the car knowing he has time left in his career
